Brrrrrr is for Ballarat

by Jo Spong

Another year older...thankfully this year is too busy for me to stop and dwell about it.

Wedding preparations have stepped up a level with dress hunting season officially opening. Unfortunately I like all of the dresses I have tried on. Now I know the real reason why wedding dresses are expensive, to stop pending brides buying 10 of them to have 10 dress changes on the day :) I recently also looked at wedding cakes (a little early I know but I had a hankerin' for some cake) and the bad news is....I like them all :) This is going to be hard! While all of this stuff is kinda fun, I have to say, it is a tiring experience. Thankfully, Al had it covered and had booked a relaxing weekend for us away as part of my bday present.

We have just returned from a weekend in Ballarat, or the "Golden City" as it is known. It is an old, large town, one of Victoria's major gold mining towns back in the day. Of course we couldn't go to Ballarat without visiting Sovereign Hill I was pleasantly surprised with how large it was and how well maintained it is. My only complaint was that it was 9 degrees with gale force winds and rain! Even though we were warned by many a person to "rug up" because Ballarat is cold, I think I could have been wearing 10 jumpers, 10 socks, 10 scarfs, 5 hats and some sheep and still have been cold :) The local waitress at a great wine bar on Lydiard street informs me that Ballarat is cold because it is higher than other Victorian locations.

Apart from it being cold, it was a nice weekend, the accommodation was lovely and the food was nice (even though the second night involved having a Japanese cook throw egg at us as part of his Teppanaki cooking - fun). Al was planning on taking me on a ghost tour however time did not permit it, and to be honest, standing in a grave yard at night in that weather whilst having the living daylight scared out of me is something I dont mind putting off until next time.

Apart from that we are still busy at work and watching the year fly by. It is now less than 8 mths until the wedding!
